The Nova Scotia chapter of the International Appalachian Trail (SIA-IAT) would like to extend a warm invitation to attend our bi-monthly chapter meeting. Our goal is to raise the profile of this project, form community and regional committees, recruit volunteers and business partners, prepare trail guides and materials, and create a continuous walking trail route from the PEI ferry terminal in Caribou to the NL ferry terminal in North Sydney.
The International Appalachian Trail is a 3,000 km international mountain walking trail route stretching from Mount Katahdin, Maine, through New Brunswick to the Gaspé region of Québec, then to Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and the west coast of the Island of Newfoundland. It connects with the Appalachian Trail (3,505 km), the Benton MacKaye Trail (96 km), the Georgia Pinhoti Trail (225 km), the Alabama Pinhoti Trail (209 km), and the Keys-Everglades Roadwalk (281 km) to form the 9,000 km Eastern Continental Trail. The SIA-IAT is now extending “across the pond” to Western Europe, putting Nova Scotia at the centre of this Trans Atlantic Appalachian trail network. Already, the NS IAT chapter plays an important role in this international organization as the central point of travel, and hosts the annual SIA-IAT Council Meeting every year in Halifax, with delegates attending from the United States, Eastern Canada, Greenland, and Europe.
The entire length of the SIA-IAT in Nova Scotia is 465 km, extending from Caribou to North Sydney. It joins the IAT route from Maine, New Brunswick, Québec and Prince Edward Island to the IAT route in Newfoundland and Labrador, and passes through wilderness, rural and urban centres. It connects scenic, historic and recreational areas in many communities and offers exciting health and fitness, tourism, and recreational opportunities for our province.
